Detailed Description
Solution:
In 2019 Legal Assistance of Olmsted County and Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services created a one-stop shop eviction clinic in the Olmsted County Court House where tenants can access information and resources to avoid an eviction. Community and social service resources are complicated and time consuming to access. At the eviction clinic, legal aid attorneys meet with clients before an eviction hearing and help negotiate agreements allowing many people to stay in their homes. This new clinic has been enormously successful and has helped 90% of clients who came to the clinic and wanted help. Additionally, Lutheran Social Services works with clients to develop a plan for financial stability.
Impact:
The partners will work with approximately 175 families during the year. The project will reduce immediate financial stress and support housing stability by streamlining help with housing and finances. Getting the eviction "expunged" or erased from the record is also a goal of the clinic.
